A Day the Life: Estelle, 13 by Kamie Kahlo

Estelle was trying her hardest not to smile for the camera. Tall and slender with big green, gold eyes and a full pout, she would glare at me every time I pleaded, "Look at me Estelle!" It wasn't that she was uncomfortable being photographed; it was that it was I on the other side of the camera. I’m her mama, the one that has been washing her tights and leotards for 10 years. Because, you see, Estelle is a ballerina. I tell the story of her dancing in the womb, gently pushing her hands and feet against the side of my tummy.

It’s true and she lives it to this day, pushing her hands and feet gently, not against my tummy, but against the studio air. She also manages to finesse the dance of leaving the nest while she keeps her eyes and ears at home. Because she is 13, she is entering one of the most exciting times of her life. As a teen Estelle wanders away from me a little bit every day. She does so with a graceful awkwardness. She is loving but tough as nails. She is confused yet has her feet firmly planted on the ground. I often marvel at her dance of life, so thoughtful. Her every move, however reckless, is carefully rehearsed and her positioning always perfect.

I spent some time photographing Estelle Sunday afternoon; Texting, filing her fake nails, texting, watching Fanboy and Chum Chum, texting, resting, texting, taking off her fake nails, snarling at the camera, re-doing her real nails, and texting.

Brrr-Animals
Seattle is all about layering. This time of year you simply don't know what you are going to get when you walk out the door. Boots are a good bet because I just know rain will be involved and leggings will block out those chilly winds that are bound to blow through the city. I pair my protective "gear" with a fun tee layered over a leopard print tank and short denim skirt. Voila! I fooled you into thinking that I have a Spring look!

Garage Sale Chic by Kamie Kahlo

In the summer I scower the city for garage sales and it's rare that I would expect to find anything but my next knick-knack. A couple of weekends ago I scored some cute clothing purchases from an oh-so-typical hippie from Queen Anne. Under a mound of pilly tops, there it was, $2 for a great asian patterned tank! No pills on this one but the perfect amount of fading and stretched out cotton sung to me. I asked the girl if I could have it for $1.50 instead so that I could grab a coffee after. What an unexpected treasure. I wore it today with my F21 $2.50 tank top, seems like so much paleez, my skinny jeans, my new hooded sandals, a Tarina Tarantino wooden necklace and bracelet and hidden in the back of my closet was an old Kymio slat jacket that I ripped the shoulder pads out of. Funny how you can feel all new in something old.

For last night's BBQ I took advantage of our great weather and wore a mini skirt with an ethnic print from F21, my top was an old tee with flutter sleeves that I found while cleaning out my drawers. The hooded sandals were a great purchase from Lovely People. I chose some chunky Tarina Tarantino wood hoop earrings and a bracelet with tiny amber crystals to tie into the ethnic theme. Lastly found an old Egg Magazine laying around and paged through to find a fun anime eye tutorial! Don't I look so Oneegyarugyaru who has graduated from high school, and thus become a more mature onee-san (お姉ギャル): a (literally "elder sister" but, here, "young lady"). Her style is more sophisticated.

Madison High Meadow by Kamie Kahlo

The Twilight movie is set in the very-real town and surrounding areas of Forks, Washington. But due to cost factors and special incentives offered by Oregon, the film was primarily shot in the Portland and the Saint Helens area. So while it might be located in Portland, Madison High actually filled in for mostly interior shots as Forks High School in the film, while the majority of exterior scenes were done up north at Kalama High School in Kalama, Washington. On our little Spring break we payed a visit to this Madison High while we were in Portland.

Cast: Rainbow as Bella in a red jacket from F21 and Urban Outfitters forest green buckled rain boots and Lil Star as Edward in her Curious George sweatshirt and GapKids jeans.

It was mighty chilly "filming" on the steps of the high school.

Rainbow makes a beautiful Bella, don't you think?

Move Over Miley Part 2 by Kamie Kahlo

Miley returns for this shoot with photographer Lucien at Studio 3, Inc! Err, at least my inspiration from Miley returns. I channeled the country girl vibe while styling and producing this darling little barn shot. (Check out the tub full of bubbles in the back!) Our little Country Cinderella mannequin is ready to rake the hay, pluck the chickens, warsh the clothes and still make that hoedown throw down! Her get-up includes a Frankie B western button up, some great finds from Nordstrom's Brass Plum and a pair of darling boots from Target's Liberty of London line. My ace-high kickers are from Miss Sixty, the top is from F21 and those down home jeans are from Little Big. Stay tuned for more from this fun shoot but, fer now I've got to skedaddle!

Today's AdelitaStyle Self Portrait: Korean by Kamie Kahlo

Where have I been? In the coming days you will see that I have been a busy little Korean girl! Just to prove it, let's start off with this collage from Lil Star's Multi-Cultural Fair. This year we decorated a presentation board focusing on current Korean music, fashion and food. While I cut and pasted photos of our favorite things, Estelle wrote an article to explain our glittery deco'd board. My fashion style was not from Korea but it was Korea-Style: I wore an F21 cardigan with that ever important shoulder detail, a Diane Medak tank with ruffle detail, Fiorucci jeans, Streets Ahead belt and a darling pair of ruffely, bowy pumps that Cherry gave me.

I'm a wine-o! A sunny roadtrip to the Tri-Cities with my girlfriend Erin started with a visit to Canyon's Edge tasting room in Kenniwick, WA and progressed to a glass of Tercet at Bookwalter and a bottle of Foreshadow Merlot to bring back home. The next morning we visited a tiny cafe were E paroused my Mark. catalog. On these casual roadtrips to small towns, I pack lightly and wear comfortable. Here's what was in my suitcase: One Juicy Couture tracksuit for the long car ride, a Sucre tank top for those sunny surprises, a cute little puffy jacket from Forever 21 for those temperature drops at night, a pair of old tweed and lycra slacks in case I need a to dress up, a white tee because it goes with anything, a darling cardigan from Mapel (stay tuned for more picks) and my mark. Flip For It in Urban Neutrals compact great for traveling!

Blancs De Blancs Wellies by Kamie Kahlo

Another great night with my bestie Dana and my hubbie D. This mid-January party out on the docks called for some sparkling Sophia in a can and plenty of Wellies. Hostesses Dana and Cynara made sure the girls were dressed to impress by holding a contest for best dressed wellies. I participated, of course, but not as much as the winner. She wore a cute hot pink sequined mini from Forever21 and scrumptious silver rain boots! Cynara showed up in extra shiny black ones, and I sported my little boy brown and black slickers paired with a gold accented cheetah print poncho from Betsey Johnson!

Punk icon Iggy Pop of the famed 70's Detroit band the Stooges came to mind today when I threw on my t-shirt from H&M. The torrential downpour that gave Seattle it's reputation is screaming into our ears and eyes much like a punk band. That's why my FOREVER21 harem pants that I just got with Mara were the perfect tuck-in for my vintage boots. And I didn't forget to accessorize, TARINA TARANTINO's Queen Alice Necklace shows how much I heart the Stooges!

Okay, get ready... I am officially entering my black period. I may mix it up with grays and I might take a walk over to creams and browns if I am feeling particularly colorful but it will mostly be about black on black on black. Texture and textiles. I don't usually tell you what to do but, you MUST take a look at this image closeup so don't forget to click on it before you leave! Today I will be carrying my KOOBA patent leather handbag and inside it my TANO oversized wallet and HK KUROMI keys. Taking me there will be my wedding shoes. Yes! I wore these amazing, fantastic RICHARD TYLER satin pumps in black when D and I eloped, in fact I wore all black. (Have to show you that picture later.) And keeping me warm, layers; THREE DOTS leggings, BEBE slit pinstriped mini, THREE DOTS long sleeve leaf print top, a vintage butterfly shell and my new XHILARATION faux lamb gilet. Since it's getting darn chilly I will bring my FOREVER21 faux leather jacket for backup. And in case anyone is looking, I am wearing the classic OPI polish in Lincoln Park After Dark.

Shopping for antiques at LISA'S is always fun. (If you are in the Seattle area, you HAVE to check out her gorgeous finds today and Saturday at 416 W. Comstock at the top of the hill in Queen Anne.) Since mornings are a bit chilly these days I wore my motorcycle jacket from FOREVER21, HORN skull cigarette jeans, HARLEY DAVIDSON boots, and my customized black tank. I bought this one at TARGET for a few bucks and embellished it with gingham ribbon that I sewed all the way around the back and tied in an adorable bow then I finished it up with a dotted mini ribbon and teeny tiny black and white baby buttons. I am coveting a great cowskin jacket that Lisa had me try on. (Had her put it on hold but, who am I kidding?) My living room is filled with her great pieces like these great Chinoiserie finds: the black screen I use in front of the fireplace, the amazing black and gold desk in the corner, even the art books and Chinese bust! Lisa even spotted the painted black chair with orange upholstery. She knew it would be the perfect compliment to my Hermes table from GREAT JONES HOME. Don't forget to check out Lisa's cool stuff!!

Here I am in my little jewel box! I was asked to submit photos of this room to a great staging and design blog! How exciting!! Take a look at my submissions to OPENHOUSE STAGING. This work in progress required a lot of bravery. I started with the notion that I wanted a Tiffany Blue room, and really what girl doesn't, but the actual blue from the coveted box ended up looking like a bathroom, a very old bathroom. So back to my swatch book and there it was... BENJAMIN MOORE'S Mexicali Turquoise! When D started painting, my stomach ached. Was it too bold? Eeek! But once I layed out my cheetah rug, positioned the EBAY "Dorothy Draper" chest of drawers, my vintage dining table and those gorg bright orange upholstered chairs, I knew there was no turning back. I hung my collection of antlers, Lil Star's tattered black pointe shoes and that great oval mirror from who knows where. The silver chandelier from HOME DEPOT and garage sale gold sconces had to go, D took them outside and painted them glossy black. And the latest touch, I drew Cinderella and Alice silhouettes to hang beside the mirror. I am on the phone here asking for advise on how to unsew my black Chinoiserie curtains with colorful dragons, I will need a bigger pocket to fit the fat drapery pole that I resurrected from my boutique. It's all coming together. All this planning takes patience and a great outfit. I am wearing a VERONICA M dress, REPORT wedges, my gold hoopy, dangely earrings from FOREVER21 and a favorite TANO bag.

Well, I'm off to another shoot! A girl can never travel lite these days and especially if she is a stylist! In the top layer of my kit I have sterile sprays: brush cleaner and rubbing alcohol. Of course next to that is hand sanitizer in a lovely vanilla bean scent. Some gum. (When you are doing someone's makeup you should always have fresh minty breath!) 12-14 different colors of foundation, 8 colors of eyeshadows, 6 different makeup brushes, several lipsticks, stains and lipglosses, cotton swabs, concealer, makeup wipes, safety pins, mascara wands, and pencil sharpeners fill each cubby and that's just the TOP layer. What do I have in my red suitcase? Hair necessities: paddle and round hair brushes, goodie combs, a skinny barrel curling iron and a fat barrel curling iron, flat iron, hair spray, pomade, hair cream and oil, haircutting drape (to protect the wardrobe from makeup application) and scissors just in case someone needs a little trim. And what do I wear? For comfort I am wearing a JOVOVICH HAWK striped dress with a STREETS AHEAD belt over black leggings and HARLEY DAVIDSON motorcycle boots. (Brought my FOREVER21 sweater just in case it gets chilly in the studio.) Are you sure you still want to be a stylist?

A Visit to Dana's Not-So-Humble Abode by Kamie Kahlo

This day was all about Dana’s new jade necklace. What to wear? I dug through her closet and found the perfect compliment! A pretty little red sweater with black ruffle detail, fabulous skinnies, sweet square-toed wine mary janes, all vintage of course. My gift to the hostess was a bottle of champagne with a hot pink ribbon that I found in my purse tied around the neck. I wore my TARINA flower with crystal detail, FRANKIE B jeans, a floral blouse from FOREVER 21, EC STAR crossed gun embroidered sweater and Mommy’s vintage burgundy pumps. What a beautiful day on the dock of Dana’s not-so-humble abode.
